Remington/Frankford Arsenal Model 1858 3-Band Tape-Primer Percussion Rifle-Musket Altered from a U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Rifle-Musket, NVSN, .69 cal., 41.5'' thin-walled round barrel marked ''JT'' at left breech, ''1856/B/98'' on rear tang, has an integral bayonet lug just behind muzzle and an adjustable leaf rear sight with range settings marked ''1'', ''2'', ''3'' and ''4''; beveled lockplate with integral Maynard tape primer mechanism is marked ''Remington's/Ilion, N.Y./1855/U.S.'' in four lines vertically behind high-spur hammer; steel furniture including serpentine sideplate marked ''LG''(?) and ''1'', triggerguard having an elongated rear tang and front sling swivel, three spring-retained barrel bands (the middle band with sling swivel, the double-strap top band with integral blade front sight); buttplate marked ''US'' on top tang, and button-tip ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock with low comb unique to Model 1816 is marked ''V/JAS'' on rear of raised apron opposite lock and ''MB'' underneath at rear triggerguard tang. Condition is near very good showing smooth aged ''bright'' metal on barrel and lock and dark patina on other metal parts. Stock is sound showing marks of smoothing over dings and scrapes, and a dark patina; tape primer mechanism works as designed. Action is tight and positive; bore appears clean with defined rifling.
