Antique Remington No. 1 Heavy Barrel Large Caliber Rolling Block Single Shot Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .45-70 CF cal., 30'' blued octagonal barrel with dovetailed blade front and open leaf rear sights; case hardened steel receiver with automatic cartridge ejector marked on upper tang ''Remingtons, Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A./Pat. May 3d, Nov 15th, 1864, April 14th, 1865'' in two lines; steel furniture including loop triggerguard, buttplate, and nosecap; oil-stained straight grain walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1868-88. Condition is fair to good, the steel surfaces having a dark gunmetal gray-brown patina with scattered heavier crusty erosion, mainly at right side of receiver, barrel breech area, triggerguard and buttplate. Stocks are sound and fit well with some expected scattered dings, the buttstock with a cut at front of comb where perhaps a tang sight was once fitted. Action functions; bore is surprisingly clean with defined rifling. While down in condition, this is nevertheless a desirable Remington sporting rifle with its heavy barrel and large caliber. Est.: $450-$650. (Antique)
