Smith & Wesson 1st Model Hand Ejector Double Action Revolver (Triplelock), #14443, .44 Spec. cal., 4'' barrel, border engraved with blue finish, diamond checkered ivory grips. Shipped April 14, 1917, to Shapleigh Hardware, St. Louis, MO, with factory letter signed by S&W Historian Roy G. Jinks. Letter states that this revolver was shipped with a 4'' barrel non-engraved, blue finish, and checkered walnut grips. An additional 1984 letter from J. Dale Terry states that this particular revolver was purchased by Mr. Terry in the 1960s from the estate of Russell B. Smith of Vernon, TX, who was an old-time lawman and bodyguard. He was also a Deputy Sheriff in Bartlesville, OK, and a U.S. Deputy Marshall in the 1920s. He received this pistol as a gift from E. Paul Waggoner from the famed Waggoner Ranch near Vernon. Condition is excellent as period engraved and later refinished. Revolver retains approx. 98% of that blue. Matching cylinder is a plum color, and white metal insert has been added to the front sight of the matching numbered barrel. Checkered ivory grips are outstanding with minor inclusions to right side panel. Action is good, bore is fine. An interesting lawman's firearm that bears further research. Est.: $2,000-$3,000.
