SADDLES, SADDLE BAGS & SHOT BOX.
This group consists of a McClellan style saddle of possible Confederate usage, a pair of saddle bags & a shot box. 1) SADDLE. A US McClellan style saddle w/ rawhide covered seat & bridle leather skirts, chinch belts, stirrups & cinch. Seat has a saddle shield that reads, “11 1/2 IN SEAT”. Leather stirrups are plain w/ wooden centers. CONDITION: saddle is relatively complete though shows ample use. Leather is somewhat cracked & crazed but remains sound. Seams on rawhide are split in areas. 2) SADDLE. Saddle tree is covered w/ bridle leather w/ no associated straps. Front of the saddle has a shield that reads, “CS”. CONDITION: saddle is in heavily used condition w/ losses to the leather & straps throughout. There is some loss to the wooden tree itself. 3) SADDLE BAGS. Bridle leather bags measure approx. 39" when laid flat. They have dbl. interior pockets & brass buckles on the outside. CONDITION: straps are generally intact but do have some losses & splits. The strap connecting the bags has broken & been repaired. Leather is in reasonably sound but in well worn condition. (02-14219/BF). 4) SHOT BOX. Box measures approx. 21 1/2" x 10" x 10" & appears to have been made from an ammunition box. Rear of the box has lg. hinges & the front has a heavy hasp. The interior lid is stenciled, “AGUSTA GA” in painted letters of questionable age. Box has an overall dark painted finish. Inside lid has a dull blue overall color. CONDITION: box’s painted finish shows significant, honest wear attesting to its lengthy use as a wooden box. The box remains solid. The hinges & hasp are sound. The interior dull blue paint is original. (02-14274/BF). $800-1,200.
