SAMUEL COLT AUTOGRAPHED LETTER CHARTER OAK .

Samuel Colt autographed letter signed, octavo, Hartford July 5, 1857. Very cryptic content in 30 lines which most likely Masonic content. The letter is addressed Hon. John Stancliff chairman of committee on human contrivances. Colt is apparently bringing someone up for membership "...in a charter oak coat of armor, who unless quickly taken down, will show his "brass mountings", and make his own, probably adverse report not unlikely fatal to the cause..." This is most unusual content where Colt seems to be cryptically referring a firearm. Boldly signed "Sam. Colt" CONDITION: ink is dark and text easily read. Cracking at folds, acid burn, light fading and mat line along edges, chipping on edge including 2" sliver missing from upper right quadrant which removes portions of 2 letters in text. (02-17905/JS). $1,500-2,500.
