REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 17174. Bbl. 7 1/2". There were over 10,000 3rd model dragoons made, but less than 15% were made for shoulder stocks, falling in 17,000 to 18,000 serial range. These were sold to the Army & civilian market alike, typically in pairs w/ shoulder stock numbered for both guns which are usually consecutive. This revolver made in 1858 is in standard configuration w/ 7.5" rnd. bbl. w/ one line New York address & oct. bbl. housing. The sm. contemporary 2 leaf rear sight has been added & dovetailed obscuring part of address. Revolver has matching serial numbers on all parts normally numbered: bbl., loading lever, frame, cyl., arbor, wedge, brass trigger guard, backstrap & last 4 digits inked inside grip channel. Frame marked on left side “COLT’S / PATENT / U. S.”, most parts are stamped w/ sm. inspector letters. CONDITION: good overall, metal is a mottled gray patina, markings are mostly discernible, faint vestiges of rolled cyl. scene can be seen w/ crisp serial number &inspection letter “C”. Grips have been refinished & no vestige of cartouche is visible, still well fit w/ edge wear, chipped toes, dents & dings. Gun appears all original w/ exception of replaced wedge screw & 2 nipples. Mechanically fine w/ crisp rifled bore. (01-19414/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-5,000.
