SCARCE AND DESIRABLE FULL NITRO 577 BOXLOCK DOUBLE

RIFLE BY GEORGE BATE. Cal. .577, 3" for 100 grains of cordite, 750 grain bullet. S# 1089. This is the classic ultimate stopper; developing over 7,000 foot pounds of muzzle energy and examples are very hard to find. The 27 1/8" chopper lump barrels are fitted with file cut quarter rib holding one standing, 4 folding leaf express sight. Leaves have platinum lines and are marked for 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. A white bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into short matching ramp. Tops of barrels engraved "Geo Bate Gun & Rifle Manufacturer" and "132 Steelhouse Lane B'ham". Barrel flats stamped with Birmingham Nitro proofs for 100 grains of cordite and 750 grain bullet. Robust boxlock double trigger action appears to be a transition between the earlier and very expensive screw grip action and the later PHV-1. This action features non automatic safety, "SAFE" inlaid in gold and pivoting third fastener that engages large square shouldered dolls head rib extension. Action walls are reinforced on sides and strikers are bushed. Action engraved with about 60% coverage very nicely cut open scroll within line and scroll borders. Blued top lever, floorplate and trigger guard engraved with more of this very attractive scroll. Serial number(1089) is on trigger guard tang that extends to large steel grip cap. Capped pistol grip buttstock of dense well streaked and lightly flame figured European walnut has grain correctly laid out through grip for maximum strength and measures 15 1/2" over brown leather covered pad. Stock features drop points, point pattern grip checkering and vacant silver oval along with a sling eye on toeline matching that on barrels. Splinter forend has Anson release. Measurements: DAC: 1 3/4" plus. DAH: 2 3/4". Neutral cast. Weight: 13 lbs. CONDITION: fine as reconditioned. Barrels retaining over 90% old plum colored reblue. Engraving slightly softened. Action has been cleaned to coin finish over some scattered frosting. Engraving still clear. Top lever, floorplate & trigger guard reblued. Top lever is flaked and worn to about 30% from hand carrying wear. Trigger plate retains nearly all of its blue with a scuff towards front. Trigger guard with flaking on trigger guard bow is gray on tang. Good quality renewed buttstock retains nearly all of its original oil finish with a few light handling marks. Refinished forearm wood also has some marks, checkering competently recut. Bores are good, strong rifling throughout with some scattered pits mostly in right barrel with some darkness in grooves. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. The ideal rifle for your next elephant hunt. Consignor states that this rifle shoots exceptionally well and has accounted for a number of elephant and buffalo in the hands of its previous owner. (22-1488/MGM). CURIO. $27,500-37,500.
