SCARCE BRITISH MODEL 1730/38 LAND SERVICE PISTOL.
WITH MARKINGS "JORDAN 1746". Cal. 65. NSN. Bbl. 12". Like many contract pistols of the period, this pistol has the characteristics of many models as older parts were used up. This fairly good example has usual 66 cal. 12" bbl. w/ remnants of proofs at breach end w/ filled in band. Typical 1738 type sm. size arched & rounded lockplate w/ rnd. bodied serpentine cock has shallow pan, bridled frizzen & feather spring w/ pineapple finial. Lock has broad arrow proof under pan & engraved w/ "GR" under a crown in front of cock. Tail of plate engraved "IORDAN" "1746". Walnut stock extends to muzzle & has a combination of styles w/ brass mounts consisting of 1715 pattern buttcap, heavy brass ramrod pipe & absence of brass thimble. Trigger guard is of 1738 pattern w/ return of bow & foliate finial. Sideplate is of 1715 pattern but is flush mounted. Raised carving around bbl. tang is of wavy type. Old rosewood ramrod has flared brass head & worm on tail. CONDITION: good, sound, original flint. Metal parts show considerable wear & cleaning & are silver to gray patina w/ considerable scattered pitting. Stock shows considerable wear w/ chipping around lockplate. 2 1/2" of stock at muzzle is restored. Brass shows years of cleaning, now has a mellow golden patina. Lock is operable.
