SCARCE “COCKED POMMEL” CONFEDERATE CAVALRY SABER.

This is a very scarce massive Confederate cavalry saber by an unknown maker which has always been a mystery to collectors, though thought to be made by a sm. manufacturer in Georgia or Tennessee based on a few characteristics noted. The 33" blade has somewhat of a penknife ricasso (College Hill), stopped fuller & a secondary upper ridge (MC & Co, Tilton). Hilt is 6" which is about 1" larger than most other Confederate or Union swords. Tilton swords also have 6" grips. The cocked “high hat” pommel is the most unusual feature by this maker, not seen elsewhere. Another unusual, but not unique, feature is the long narrow quillon about 2" long normally found on officer swords but rarely on sabers other than a couple scarce Georgia & Tennessee makers, EJ Johnston and Sharp & Hamilton. The scabbard for this saber also has unique characteristics not seen on other makers. Scabbard body has braised seam & not lapped over, brass ring mts. (Sharp & Hamilton and Memphis Novelty Works). Throat is a heavy cast brass collar w/ iron flanges (Memphis Novelty Works). The drag is unique in its lg. size, about 4x2 1/4" thin iron blade braised on, I am not aware of other makers w/ this feature. There is an identical example of this sword that belonged to a Natchez Mississippi soldier at the Louisiana Confederate Museum in New Orleans. This is the best example we are aware of privately owned. CONDITION: very good overall, sword is original & complete in every regard other than missing protective leather washer. Blade is gray w/ sharpening. Grip is complete, retaining much original leather polish w/ scuffing, original patinated single strand copper wire wrap. Hilt & pommel have uncleaned olive/brown patina, quillon is bent down. Scabbard is sound w/ mixed mottled patinas. The original throat originally soldered in place is loose & could be reattached by a good conservator/restorer. (02-15369/JS). $4,000-5,000.
