S# 5909. All visible matching numbers. Scarce earlier Type 10 smoothbore "Knee Mortar". The later rifled Type 89 model is far more commonly encountered than the Type 10. Nagoya arsenal mfg. approx. 1937. Nicknamed "Knee mortar" due to American servicemen thinking the curved baseplate allowed firing from thigh. Firing in this manner would result in serious injury. This example has been demilled w/ a large hole drilled in the tube, an added bar in center of tube & a large welded on bottom of tube. CONDITION: metal retains most original blue w/ some touch up blue near weld, scattered freckling & oxidation. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18418/MJC) $500-700.
