BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 8776d. All visible S#s match. 29 3/16" bbl. Victor Christian Schilling was a gun maker located in Suhl & was part of a consortium of arms makers which included Haenel & Sauer working for the Prussian government to produce Model 98 rifles. It is not certain if any of these 3 firms produced all the parts necessary for complete rifles or if they were mutually supporting as had been done earlier between Haenel & Schilling when producing Model 88 carbines. Bright receiver & bolt. Receiver ring is marked on top "V.CHR. SCHILLING / SUHL 1917". Marked on right side w/ imperial proofs and on the left side w/ Prussian eagle acceptance mark. Left receiver rail marked in Fraktur "Gew98". Bbl. is marked on top over chamber w/ "S" . Lange rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight. Straight bolt handle. Upper band has "parade hook". Bayonet bar & cleaning rod are present. Bottom swivels. Detachable rear swivel is present. Beech stock w/ walnut hand guard. Stock is equipped w/ steel disassembly disk. Butt is marked on right side w/ Imperial Monograms plus "B" indicating beech stock. CONDITION: stock set is well worn w/ dents, scratches & staining throughout. Notable dents & sm. gouges on right side of forend by grasping groove. Forend has notable wear on both sides due to band removal. Hand guard has notable cracks in forward end. Worn metal has traces blue turning overall gray & patina. Receiver & bolt have been lightly cleaned. (23-2229/RW). MODERN. CURIO. $800-1,100.
