SCARCE INSCRIBED A. H. DEWITT, COLUMBUS GEORGIA

OFFICER’S SWORD. This is a classic branched hilt foot officer’s sword made by A. W. Dewitt, Columbus, Georgia. 30 1/2" Unstopped fuller blade, short distinctive sparse detail pommel, solid knuckle bow not slotted for sword knot, 2 branched guard w/ no decoration. The scabbard also unique to Dewitt made from leather covered wood w/ distinct pinned mounts w/ sm. lightweight ring attachments. The throat has a contemporary partially discernible inscription of unknown officer “H. P. H. / Co. A 3 Regt / M.” There are a couple indiscernible letters before “M” in the last line. Maybe a little research would find HPH in a 3rd Militia. CONDITION: very good overall, all original & complete. Brass mounts, hilt & pommel have all been cleaned, polished & varnished. Twisted wire wrap is missing other than tiny remnants under pommel. Blade is overall gray w/ areas of pitting, uncleaned, showing forging flaws. Two pieces of wood that formed the scabbard are sound, but the leather veneer is scuffed & chipped w/ a lg. open seam on back side between top mounts. An identical example of this sword can be found in the American Museum of the Civil War in Richmond identified to a Virginian. (02-15410/JS). $4,000-5,000.
