RIFLE IN HIGH ORIGINAL CONDITION. Cal. 404 Jeffery. S# 114 (1925). Mauser# 57271 (on bottom of action, visible with stock removed). This fine classic rifle was probably made for the lighter 300 gr. Jeffery bullet for use at long range heavy game as this rifle has 28" half round, half octagon ribbed bbl. Central portion of rib is slightly milled away leaving integral quarter rib fitted with three folding leaf rear sight and front ramp holding white bead. Ramp is also fitted with knurled sight protector. Top of rib is engraved "No 114 Griffin & Howe, Inc. New York". Cal. is at left rear. Magnum Mauser square bridge action with stipled receiver ring is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER - OBERNDORF a/n" on sidewall with thumbcut. Top of square bridge is also stipled and right side of bridge is fitted with Lyman 48 receiver sight. Bolt with engine turned body has usual commercial pear shaped knob and is fitted with long cocking piece and flag safety ("SAFE" gold inlaid). Trigger is single stage. Bottom metal specially made for .404 Jeffery cartridge has hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow. Classically styled early type Griffin & Howe pistol grip stock of very nicely streaked European walnut measures 14 1/8" over open sided "Whippet" pad. Stock features shadowline right hand cheekpiece, steel gripcap, horn forend tip, engraved steel recoil bolt and usual high quality G&H point pattern checkering with mullered borders at grip and around forend. A vacant silver oval and sling eye are on toeline. CONDITION: very fine, appears to be all original. Metal retaining over 90% rust blue with some silvering on sharp edges and marks on floorplate. Stocks retain nearly all of what appears to be original hand rubbed oil finish with a few light marks. Checkering with very little wear. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. (22-4865/MGM).
