SCARCE & PRETTY DARN NEAT W. & C. SCOTT
"QUINTUPLE BOLT" HAMMER SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 Ga. (2 5/8"). S# 6527. (1875). With attempts at the perfection of the breech loading system, many companies vied for ways to make the strongest possible gun action, some utilizing as many as six different bolts. W. & C. Scott came up w/ this interesting system to compete w/ W. W. Greener's very popular cross bolt. While the principal is sound, the amount of work entailed in building these guns was prohibitive & this system was abandoned upon Greener's patent expiring. This gun is fitted w/ 29 3/4" fine 3 stripe damascus bbls., w/ slightly raised game rib engraved "Scott's Patent Quintuple Bolt" w/ maker's name & "Regent Circus" London address. Bbls. have doll's head rib extension & flats are stamped w/ London black powder proofs for "13" bore. Case hardened action is fitted w/ front spring, rebounding locks w/ rnd. bodied serpentine hammers. Top lever retracts both standard Purdey underbolts & dual rnd. locking bolts on sides. Action & locks are engraved w/ sm. scroll borders w/ setter & duck scenes on sides of locks. Maker's name is on each lockplate under hammers. Stump figured & somewhat marbled dense European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over checkered horn buttplate. Stock features horn grip cap, point pattern checkering, drop points & silver oval. Matching splinter forend w/ shaped steel tip has Scott's patent push button release.
