SCARCE SPANISH MODEL 1874 ROLLING BLOCK SINGLE
SHOT MUSKETOON. Cal. 43 Spanish Reformado. S# NSN. Bbl. 23 1/8" w/ folding rear sight graduated to 600 meters. Stud type front sight. These handy carbine length rifles were used mostly to arm Sappers & Garrison Artillery Troops. This rifle is in 43 Spanish Reformado although it does not have the usual "F" or "R" markings which were stamped at the time the rifles were rechambered. the transformation allowed the use of both the 43 Spanish & the later 43 Spanish Reformado. Receiver is marked on right side w/ crown "AR." & "O." plus "1886". The breech block is fitted w/ a firing pin retractor & sliding bar extractor. The hinge pins appear to be modern replacements. 2 piece walnut stock set. The forend is secured w/ 2 clamping bands which are also retained by springs. Forend has characteristic Spanish transverse reinforcing screw. Correct ramrod is present. The buttstock has various numerals on both sides & a flat type buttplate w/ long tang. Buttplate marked w/ "CF" in oval. Bottom swivels are fitted. The rear fitted swivel mounted in the butt & the front swivel in the upper band. Unmarked vintage sling w/ brass fittings & single sliding keeper. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 21 3/4" triangular blade bayonet is marked w/ sm. 4 pointed "flower". Unmarked leather scabbard & belt frog. Scabbard has brass tip which has been reinforced w/ copper wire. Bayonet shows traces of original glue turning gray & patina w/ light oxidation & scattered shallow thinning. Brown leather scabbard has wear, scuffing & staining. Brass tip turning patina has wear & dents. CONDITION: stock set has the wear & handling marks expected from long service but retains the appeal of an unusual piece. Metal has traces of original blue which is fading & turning gray plus showing wear & handling marks. Breech block & hammer were bright but are now turning gray as well. Shiny bore w/ moderate wear to lands. (01-23484/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
