MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40". 15,000 of these Model 1861 rifle muskets were mfg. between 1863 & 1864 by Parker, Snow & Co. Meriden, CT. Bbl. marked on top left flat w/ "VP" & eagle head proof. Marked on top "1863". 2 Leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Stud type front sight. Beveled lockplate marked w/ spread eagle "U.S. PARKERS' SNOW & CO. MERIDEN, CONN.". Dated "1863" on tail of lockplate. Walnut stock marked on left panel w/ 2 inspectors' cartouches. Buttplate marked on top "US 39". Forend fastened by 3 solid flat bands, retained by springs. Tulip headed ramrod w/ swill. Middle band & trigger guard bow equipped w/ swing swivels. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish w/ added finish over light staining & handling marks. Notable vertical scratch on left panel. Bright metal has been cleaned but is returning to gray w/ light peppery oxidation & light wear. Bore has strong lands but scattered spots of oxidation plus pitting throughout. (01-23835/RW). ANTIQUE. $900-1,100.
