SCHILLING GERMAN PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE.

Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. 41 1/8" oct. measuring 1" across flats. German silver blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Top flat has gold inlaid marking "V. CHR. SCHILLING IN SUHL". Island lock w/ manual hammer block safety. Dbl. set triggers. Serpent head engraved hammer w/ checkered spur. Lock has game scene featuring a stag surrounded by vine type foliate scroll that extends to hammer, top tang & breech end of bbl. Wedge fastened full length walnut stock. Right side of stock has wooden lid patch box. Wrist & forearm of stock have checkering intertwining w/ leaf pattern hand carving that extends to patch box lid & right side of butt behind cheekpiece. Ramrod channels have chain link style incised carved borders. Toeline of stock behind trigger guard is stamped "LBW / 29". German silver fittings consist of buttplate, finger curl trigger guard, sideplate escutcheons, thimble, 2 faceted pipes & wedge escutcheons. Trigger guard bow has game scene w/ stag surrounded by scroll work that extends to the finial, thimble, side plate escutcheons & buttplate tang. Hardwood ramrod. Oval brass tag marked "J.M. DAVIS / 1941 / MEMORIAL" is attached to trigger guard. The JM Davis Firearms Museum in Claremore, OK is home to the world's largest privately held firearms collection. CONDITION: metal has faded to mottled gray brown showing scattered light pitting & corrosion. Stock shows wear & age darkening. Forearm along both sides of bbl. channel are missing narrow chips. Stock is cracked through the wrist, lock & trigger area w/ lg. chip missing rear side plate escutcheon. Lock is functioning when used w/ unset trigger only.
