Following over 40 separate surgeries as a “Limb Salvage” patient, Kirstie lost the battle to save her leg. The resulting “routine” amputation turned tragic almost claiming her life in addition to her leg.
While attending the 2015 Sheep Show in Reno only two weeks after being released from the hospital, Kirstie met renowned artist WSF Member, Air Force Veteran and artist Nevada Grasse. Nevada volunteered to donate a patriotic themed skull to help raise funding for WSF as well as the healing efforts of WWO. He needed a very large skull to complete his vision, a Buffalo was desired. However funding for WWO did not allow using funds for such a cause. Another fellow WSF member overheard the conversation and anonymously donated a Buffalo hunt for Kirstie.
The hunt took place in February of 2016 just two weeks after receiving her first prosthetic leg, her first adventure as an amputee. The purpose of the hunt was NOT to harvest a trophy for Kirstie. The purpose was to create a unique one of a kind piece of artwork to help support future efforts to get wounded warriors back into the outdoors, post injury. In addition provide food for other warriors struggling to make ends meet on disability income, the buffalo provided 3600 meals.
To make this even more special, a group of WWO alumni warriors had a U.S. Flag flown in Afghanistan to benefit their fellow warriors. The group then carried the same flag throughout Europe, before having the flag flown over the US Military Cemetery at Normandy. The base for displaying the flag will be fully donated by The Wildlife Gallery. Every aspect of this amazing piece of artwork has been generously donated from the hunt, taxidermy, meat processing, and artwork down to the base. All donated by either veterans or wounded warriors in support of their brothers and sisters.
There will NEVER be another piece of artwork comparable to this! Every component is a story in itself.
