MILITARY PERCUSSION RIFLE. Cal. 52. S# C,35504. Featured in The Sharps Collector Vol. 24, No. 2 pg. 35 & 36. Bbl. shortened to 14 1/8" & retains base only for rear sight. Action is complete w/ Sharps pellet priming system integral w/ lockplate. Forearm is shortened to correspond w/ bbl. length & decorated w/ 5 sets of pearl ornamentation on sides & bottom consisting of sm. circle at center of 2 arrow style points. Straight grip walnut stock w/ rectangular lid iron patch box, steel rifle buttplate & sling swivel. The Sharps Collector article attributed the inlays as representing Civil War Union Corp badges. Identified badges include the arrow (17th Corp., 1st Div.), Heart (24th Corp, 1st Div.) & triangle (4th Corp., 3rd Div.). Heart inlay is missing. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: The Sharps Collector magazine as noted above; binder containing photos, diagrams & explanation of Indian marks by Wendell Grangaard, the Guns of History Inc. Sioux Falls, SD. Diagrams show Mr. Grangaard's interpretation of "Togia" markings that are partially distinguishable on the rifle. According to translation, these markings identify the rifle as belonging to "Bird Tail" who was in attendance at Little Big Horn, a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux. Mr. Grangaard interprets the apparent Union Army Corp. badges to represent Indian symbols. CONDITION: metal has dark patina appearance showing light pitting. Wood has worn finish showing numerous scratches, dents & marks, many of which are identified by Mr. Grangaard as Indian markings. Hammer will not fully cock. Dark heavily pitted bore. (01-17980/DS).
