BUFFALO RIFLE. Cal. 45, 2 7/8" (45-110). S# 98093. Many surplus percussion sharps were converted to cartridge rifles after the Civil War and often associated with use by buffalo hunters in the American west. The 45, 2 7/8" cartridge was a favorite amongst buffalo hunters as well. Bbl. 30" octagon measuring 1" across flats at muzzle. Top flat is marked "Old Reliable" and "Sharps Rifle Co. Bridgeport, Conn." German silver blade front sight with graduated leaf rear sight. Action has conversion breech block and added double set triggers. Primer feed is removed from lock plate. Plate is marked "C. SHARPS PAT/OCT 5TH 1852". 2 Screw fastened walnut forearm and military carbine stock with steel buttplate, left side has base only for saddle ring bar. Weight: 10 lbs., 10.6 oz. CONDITION: metal has faded to mottled gray/brown showing scattered spots of corrosion. Wood shows heavy wear and handling marks. Forearm is missing long chip along left side with smaller chips at action and heavy dent on bottom. Stock has large cracks through wrist and toe areas with smaller cracks and chips around lock and action. Action and triggers function properly. Dark bore shows some light pitting and retains sound rifling. Lever closes with a 3/8" gap to lower tang. (01-21336/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,000.
