SHORTENED SPRINGFIELD 1816 PERCUSSION MUSKET.

Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 32" w/ smooth bore. Right side of lockplate is marked "SPRINGFIELD" & 1838. There is the remnants of old white tape on the right side of the butt w/ writing that reads in part "HARRISBURG" & "MEXICO" but the majority of the writing is illegible. The initials "JDV" are present behind the lower tang. "CB" is also carved ahead of the trigger guard. This conversion may have been done w/ a breach from one of the German states & a non-US convex hammer. The hammer will not cock & will require mechanical attention. The button shaped ramrod has been shortened. The cutdown walnut stock has the remnants of a US ordnance cartouche on the left flat. CONDITION: stock has an older added black finish that is heavily worn w/ a textured appearance, two large chips near the buttplate, a few cracks, overall dings & handling wear from the years. The metal is a brown oxidized patina w/ scattered moderate pitting. The bore is plugged about 18" from muzzle & shows overall oxidation. (01-21119/MJC). ANTIQUE. $300-500.
