REVOLVER. Cal. 38 Spl. S# C259829. The Aircrewman was a lightweight revolver produced from 1951-1957. The Air Force used special loads that were safe w/ the aluminum cyls., however many ruptured when used w/ standard ammunition. In the late 1950's the Air Force recalled the revolvers & ordered them to be destroyed & sold for scrap metal. Consequently, very few of the approx. 40,000 survive today in original condition. Bbl. 2" w/ rib & serrated ramp front sight. Left side marked "AIRWEIGHT" over cal. marking. Alloy frame, top strap marked "REVOLVER, LIGHTWEIGHT, M 13". Backstrap marked "Property of U.S. Air Force". 6 Shot fluted aluminum cyl. 5 Screw action w/ pinned bbl. & flat cyl. latch. .240 Hammer & serrated trigger. 2 Piece walnut diamond checkered rnd. butt Magna grips w/ silver S&W medallions. Left grip along backstrap near butt hand stamped "21". Inside of right grip panel numbered "2S9/338". Back of extractor & cyl. under extractor have assembly No. "4690". Assembly No. on inside of frame "5569". Yoke numbered "43354". Bbl. & cyl. have no S# markings. CONDITION: frame & cyl. retain over 80% black finish showing edge wear & scattered handling marks. Bbl. retains 95% blue. Hammer & trigger retain sm. amounts of faded case colors. Cyl. swings out very stiffly. Cyl. pin latch on bbl. is missing plunger spring & retaining pin. Grips have lightly worn finish showing sm. dents & handling marks. Bright bore retaining near excellent rifling. (21-2957/DS). CURIO. $3,750-5,500.
