SOCIETY OF CINCINATTI MEMBERSHIP DOCUMENT.
This 22" x 14 1/2" document appears to be a 19th century copy of the 1780s original which was on vellum. This example is on paper w/ a plate number barely visible in the upper right hand corner that appears to read "PL XXXIII". Document is made out to "Winthrop Sargent Esquire Captain of Artillery ADC to General Howe and Major in the American Armies". Along w/ Sargent"s notable Revolutionary War service, he served as the 1st Governor of the Mississippi Territory from 1798-1801, Secretary of Northwest Territory 1788-1798 & Adjutant General of the U. S. Army in 1791. This plate is from the book "American Historical and Literary Curiosities - consisting of Fac-Similes of Original Documents Relating to the Events of the Revolution..." by Smith & Watson. All written aspects of the document appear printed. Document is in an old frame which has a framer"s tag on the back paper for Foster Brothers of Boston who went out of business in 1942. Document has not been examined out of frame. A wonderful early document likely produced to replace an original that was lost or destroyed. CONDITION: document shows no tears or losses. There is a central crease from folding. Overall document shows light foxing but dark, crisp ink. (02-13214/BF). $300-500.
