4" x 3" cockade made by June Murray Wells (1934-2020) long time director of the Charleston Confederate Museum and genuine Charlestonian. This is identical to the badges worn by South Carolinians to symbolize their defiance of the Union at the Secession Convention in December 1860 when South Carolina became the first state to secede from the union. Cockade is made from Palmetto tree fronds and sea oats. CONDITION: fine, mounted on gray felt, backed with history of manufacture. PROVENANCE: Dave Berenson estate collection. (02-27313/JS). NON-GUN. $100-200.
