SOUTHERN BEAR KILLER PISTOL FROM TENNESSEE OR
NORTH CAROLINA. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 15 1/2". An exceptionally interesting firearm that, according to the consignor, was fabricated to dispatch wounded bears or other large game. Pistols like this have a history in Tennessee and North Carolina, and it is likely this piece originated there. It appears to be constructed by a local gunsmith from various parts laying around his shop. The octagon to round barrel appears to be cut down from a musket barrel and has a bead sight on the front. There is a ring embellishment around the barrel 9 1/4" from the breech. The hunting rifle lock is marked "L.G. BONEKILL" and is engraved with foliate & flourish decorations. The hammer is plain and appears hand-forged. Iron trigger guard and repurposed barrel band. The brass tipped oak ramrod is mounted to the side of the pistol. One of the more interesting features of this weapon is the large knob protruding from the bottom of the stock near the barrel band to allow the left hand to steady the weapon during firing. CONDITION: iron has a dark gray/brown patina. Stock is generally undamaged. Ramrod appears original and is complete. Lock holds one cocking position. Fair bore. (01-23957/BF). $1,750-2,500.
