HISTORY. Cal. 36. S# 31315. Bbl. 20" of carbine style w/ barleycorn front sight & graduated leaf rear sight. Top of receiver marked “MODEL / 1865 / SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860 MANJF’D AT PROV. R.I. / BY BURNSIDE RIFLE Co”. Lever action repeater w/ hammer mounted on side lock. 7 Shot mag. Loads through the buttplate. Band fastened walnut forearm & straight grip stock. Togia is the pictorial language of the Plains indians. Wendell Grangaard of The Guns of History is author of the book “Documenting the Weapons used at the Little Bighorn”. Through his friendship w/ Benjamin Black Elk, Wendell has learned & has been able to document the Togia language. According to Wendell’s translation of the togia marks, this gun was carried by Chief Little Horse of the Oglala Sioux. Left side of the stock has numerous lightly visible markings that Wendell has translated to be Little Horse’s signature mark. The meaning of other markings translated by Wendell include: Plenty Horse, rode with, killed soldier, White Clay Creek, Short Bull, Good Thunder, Kills Bear, Crow Dog, friend, rode, fought together, Crazy Horse, Strong Hold, Rose Bud, Little Horse, Bird Head, Strikes Two. Chief Little Horse of the Oglala Sioux rode w/ Crazy Horse at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, June 25th 1876. He surrendered w/ Crazy Horse at the Red Cloud Agency at Fort Robinson, Nebraska on May 5th, 1877. Little Horse was present when Crazy Horse was killed & afterwards moved to the forks on White Clay Creek north & west of the Pine ridge. Chief Little Horse rode to the Battle of Wounded Knee, but was too late to stop the carnage. A few days later on December 30th, 1890, he led a small band of Oglala Sioux to the battle of Dresxal Mission, which was the last battle of the Indian Wars. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Wendell Grangaard’s translation of the togia markings along w/ information about Chief Little Horse’s life & the Drexel Mission fight. Also includes copies of 2 photographs of Chief Little Horse & his wife. CONDITION: metal has a dark patina showing general light pitting. Wood has an age darkened appearance showing scratches, dents & marks. Bore retains largely intact rifling showing spots of pitting. Sound action. Mag. Tube is intact.
