SPRINGFIELD 1903A1 USMC BOLT ACTION SNIPER RIFLE
W/ USMC MARKED UNERTL SCOPE. Cal. 30-06. S# 1496946. Bbl. 24". Very rare US Marine Corp sniper rifle with correct Unertl scope. Receiver serial number indicates post 1934 production & would be correct for barrel date. Star gauged barrel marked “SA”, flaming bomb, & “8-38”. Receiver has very shallow punch mark on top of right rail approx. 1.5" behind receiver rank as would be correct for National Match rifles. Receiver has gas escape hole (Hatcher Hole). Rear sight is not present in sight base, but rifle retains flat windage knob. Blade front sight. Rifle is fitted with scope blocks. Cut off is marked “-3” w/ block letters. Blued bolt is marked on top “NS” & marked underneath with punch mark & “Z”. Blued extractor has gas escape hole. National Match type serrated trigger. Rear sight base is marked on right side “C 63934” below stock line. Walnut “C” type stock has 2 recoil bolts marked only with “S” in cut out recess. Stock has added “USMC” & “23” on right side of butt parallel with buttplate. All milled furniture with deep checkered national match type buttplate. Handguard mortise for scope base measures approx. 1 1/16x5/8". Handguard cut appears professionally modified, however scope base mortise has less workmanlike appearance & is of smaller dimensions than those given in reference works. Approximately 1/8" hole drilled behind front scope block surrounded by shallow, circular scratches. Handguard marked on inside with “79” no chalked assembler’s initials. Unmarked 1907 Military type sling. Nickel plated oiler in butt. Unertl 8 power externally adjustable telescopic sight w/ adjustable objective. Blue steel scope tube is marked ahead of adjustable ring “J. UNERTL USMC-SNIPER” & “1557” serial number. Adjustable ring marked w/ “8”, which indicates the power of the telescope. Scopes were not fitted with recoil springs as it was felt that the possibility of sand from beaches would cause undue wear. Scope has fine crosshair. Scope mounts are dark, anodized duralumin. CONDITION: stock set has light to moderate wear, staining, & handling marks commensurate with careful service. Stock tip has large missing chip under left side of upper band. Forend tip has been modified with the addition of 2 holes, as if an attempt was made to provide a cleaning rod. Barrel retains 75% lightly worn thinning blue with scattered spots of missing finish. Receiver has 75% worn, thinning original gray Parkerized finish. Rails have been polished. Bolt retains approximately 50% of thinning, worn blue. Balance of metal retains 60% thinning Parkerization with light wear, & scattered scratches. Barrel has wrench marks between "P" proof & rear sight base visible when handguard is removed. Front sight base has notable scratches from detachable sight cover which is not present. Replacement floorplate turning patina. Scope optics are slightly cloudy & horizontal crosshair has slight distortion. Main tube has 75% of original finish with thinning & light wear, scattered scratches with small spots of missing finish. Ocular & objective bells have arsenal type refinished. Very good shiny bore with lightly worn lands. (20-1796/RW). CURIO. $9,000-14,000.
