SPRINGFIELD 1904 HOSPITAL CORPS BOLO KNIFE.
Model 1904 Hospital Corps bolo knife manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1914. Left side of blade is stamped "SA/ (FLAMING ORDNANCE BOMB)/ 1914", with "U.S." above the serial number "40122" on the right. Wood handle with brass guard, rivets, and end cap. Leather scabbard is stamped "ROCK ISLAND/ ARSENAL/ 1911." above the inspector initials "H.E.K.". CONDITION: blade exhibits some scattered spots of pitting and discoloration, with some spots of verdigris, appearing to be from the scabbard. Blade edge shows several nicks, chips, and dents. Brass components exhibit a pleasing mellow patina. Handle shows scattered marks and impressions, but remains sturdy and serviceable. Scabbard shows scattered handling marks overall, with some crazing to the leather. Steel belt look exhibits surface oxidation. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan.
