SPRINGFIELD ARMORY M14 ROCK ISLAND CONVERSION
RIFLE. Cal. 308. S# 25119. Bbl. 22". The M14 was developed through a series of testing with an overly ambitious set of requirements. Its earliest roots can be traced to a post WWII study by the “Army Ground Forces Equipment Review Board” w/ the lofty goal of replacing the M1 Garand, the M1918A2 BAR & any currently used sniper rifles. Making things even more difficult, the requirement was even altered to include use that typically called for Carbine & SMG. After extensive testing & numerous design alterations/adaptations, the US Rifle, 7.62 mm, M14 was adopted on May 1st 1957. Shortly after the US Army Infantry Board issued requirements for this new Wonder Rifle to address three specific areas, including accuracy enhancement & reduction of recoil & muzzle climb. After several improvements & exhaustive amount of testing, in the end it was determined that this system was simply too light to be utilized as a suitable replacement for the BAR. This particular rifle stated life as a Springfield Armory semi-auto M1A then was later converted to its current M14 configuration by Rock Island Armory.
