MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 70. Bbl. 35" rnd. w/ no visible markings other than S# 70 on left side at breech. Top tang is marked w/ matching S# 70. Left side of receiver has standard patent date marking. Model 1874 actions numbered in a separate series from 1-300 were furnished to the Springfield Armory in 1871. All other parts were built at Springfield. Barley corn front sight w/ fully leaf rear sight. 2 Band walnut forearm. Button tipped iron cleaning rod. Straight grip stock w/ steel musket buttplate. Left side has "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche. Rock Island Arsenal marked leather sling w/ "H.E.K." inspector's marks on original swivels. CONDITION: metal has faded to a pleasing brown patina. Wood has worn appearance showing scattered dents & handling marks w/ sm. chips around action & rear bbl. band. Sling is supple & in good condition. Sound action. Bore retains largely intact rifling showing scattered pitting. (01-20433/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,250-3,000.
