The successful bidder for 2017 California bighorn Heritage Tag may hunt in a total of 11 California bighorn units except for Unit 041 and the unit where the 2016 Heritage Tag harvest occurred. The season dates are August 1 – December 31, 2017. The majority of the California bighorn herds exist on mountains of rocky slopes and sagebrush grasslands with peaks ranging from 6,000 to 9,000 feet elevation. Some bighorn herds inhabit steep rugged canyon walls and escarpments that rise to flat-top plateaus and buttes where pronghorn can commonly be observed. Most of the bighorn habitat area is public land, primarily managed by the Bureau of Land Management with some herds found on U.S. Forest Service lands and on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. One third of the hunt units involve designated wilderness areas. Nevada is not known for large B&C rams. The 2015 hunting season had 63 rams harvested with the largest ram scoring 172 7/8. At least one ram over 170 B&C has been harvested each year since 2013.
