This is the coveted Nevada Desert Bighorn Heritage Tag offered by Nevada Department of Wildlife and Board of Wildlife Commissioners. Nevada has 314 mountain ranges, more than any other lower 48 state, and more desert bighorn sheep than any other jurisdiction in North America. This vast and rugged canvas of both the Mojave and Great Basin Desert mountains are naturally suited for wild sheep. Through the vision of wildlife biologists and passionate support from sportsmen groups like the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn and Nevada Bighorns Unlimited, bighorn sheep restoration and water development efforts have helped increase Nevada’s desert bighorn population from its low of 2,500 in 1960 to over 8,000! Though total bighorn numbers have been depressed in recent years, there still great rams scattered across the state. The most recent harvest data from the 2021 season was 266 rams with 14 rams 170+ B&C from 10 different hunt units. Two rams scored 180 B&C or greater and the longest horn length from 2021 was 41 1/8”. Standard tag eligibility provisions do not apply to this tag. The 2023 Nelson Desert Bighorn Heritage – July 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023 (4 units on DOD lands have restricted access, limited season dates, and special requirements). At the start of the season all desert bighorn units are open to this tag. The tagholder will be notified of any units that reach their maximum ram harvest allowed by specialty tagholders. Nevada’s bighorn sheep restoration program is supported in large part by the auction of this Heritage desert bighorn sheep tag.
