STUNNING CIVIL WAR UNION OFFICERS SLOUCH HAT
FOR THE 6TH INFANTRY. An exemplary specimen with matching gold bullion embroidered officers insignia. The front of the hat features an infantry horn with metal false embroidered “6” in the center. The left side (as worn) is held up by a beautifully executed American eagle with stars and glory above. A high grade officer’s hat cord adorns the base of the hat and is constructed of gold bullion and black wool. The right side of the hat has a period silk cockade with a gold plated officer’s eagle “I” button in the center. A rakish black ostrich feather extends back from the cockade. There is a black grosgrain hat band and black grosgrain border edging the hat. There is a wide 2 1/2" black leather sweatband on the interior. Front and side insignia are held on with leather thongs. CONDITION: the hat shows extremely light use overall. There is a bit of thread wear to the hat cords and minor wear and loosening of the bullion border of the infantry horn insignia. Silk cockade shows very minor fraying. Sweatband shows minimal wear. PROVENANCE: From the Renowned Collection of Allen & Robin Wandling. (02-14002/BF). $6,000-8,500.
