TARGET PISTOLS BY MOUTIER LEPAGE WITH CASE & ACCESSORIES. Cal. 47. NSN. Moutier Lepage was the son in law of John Andre Prosper Lepage, son of Jean, the famous Paris gunmakers. He worked between 1842-68. These fine pistols have 10" dbl. fluted octagon bbls. engraved "flli P. LePage Moutier" on top flats. Bbls. are blued & secondary small flutes are bright polish. Breeches are very nicely filed & engraved with semi relief shaded acanthus. The numbers "1" & "2" are engraved on tops. These numbers are also on matching breech irons which are fitted with blued U-notch rear sights. Front spring island locks are nicely shaped & have rebated tails. Locks are fitted with tall deeply chamferred flat faced serpentine hammers. Hammers & locks are also semi relief engraved in shaded scrolling acanthus of exceptional quality. Ebony stocks have fluted grips which extend to well sculpted steel caps with turned finials. Caps & spurred trigger guards & trigger plates with shaped finials are engraved en suite. Stocks are also deeply relief carved with scrolling acanthus in a style matching metal engraving. This work is exceptionally well done. Stocks mount to bbls. with sidebolts through engraved steel oval escutcheons. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pistols are housed in their original rosewood case. Top has central brass inlet fancy plate engraved A.V. Top has brass inlet bands around edges. Interior is lined in dark green velvet & inside of lid has "LEPAGE MOUTIER" "A PARIS" in gold leaf. Bottom compartment is full French fitted for pistols & original accessories, including case hardened steel round ball mold, ebony loading mallet, ebony handled nipple wrench; turnscrew & loading rods for each pistol. A third is fitted with brass jag. Rods are of rosewood. Also included is a very fine slim powder measure with embossed copper body & brass top with spring measure. CONDITION: very fine. Bbl. of gun number 2 retaining over 90% original blue with bbl. on gun number 1 at about 80% due to cleaning. Other metal parts retain essentially all of their French gray finish with some small areas of light discoloration. Stocks are exceptionally fine with few noted scratches or marks & no noted cracks or imperfections. Bores are bright & shiny. Mechanically crisp. Case is fine with most of its original exterior finish with four repaired cracks on lid. Interior cloth is fine with considerable rubs & some losses in lid. Accessories are also very fine, showing minimal use. (01-21235 & 01-21236/MGM). BOTH ANTIQUE. $12,000-16,000.
