SHOTGUN BY J. STAPLETON. Cal. 47 smooth / 45 rifled. NSN. 38" bbl. set consist of 2 octagon twist steel bbls. mounted w/ U-notch rear & brass front sights & stamped w/ maker's name "J. Stapleton" on top flats (most likely James Stapleton, working in Todd, PA., 1838-1890). Bbl. sets are also fitted w/ full length curly maple side panels w/ brass flashguards. 1 Panel holds hickory ramrod in beaded pipes & tailpiece. Breech swivels to align top & bottom of bbl. w/ a secondary trigger to latch bbls. in position. Back spring lock w/ serpentine hammer is unmarked & has dummy left hand sideplate. Buttstock of curly maple is brass mounted w/ spur forming grip of trigger guard. Deep crescent buttplate w/ 5" return & fancy outlined patchbox w/ engraved oval cover. There is a German silver oval at top of grip & an 8 pointed elongated star on face of long cheekpiece. CONDITION: good. Iron parts w/ brown patina. Pattern of bbls. evident but not strong. Brass is deeply toned. Stocks w/ most of an old, possibly original, finish shows areas worn through from normal hand use. Bores are very good. Lock & triggers operable. Swivel mechanism quite loose.
