This is a Sako manufactured M28/30 bolt-action Mosin pattern rifle. The rifle is chambered for 7.62x54R. Manufactured for the Finnish Civil Guard in 1939, before importation by Marathon Products, Inc of Weth, CT. The rifle features the Sako manufacture stamp, as well as SA property mark, civil guard inventory # S110660, 1939 Sako proofing mark and various proofs correct to the manufacturing period. Stamping is crisp and clear, less the import mark behind the muzzle. The bolt handle knob is stamped 9833, consistent with the SN. The rifle features the correct front and rear sights introduced for the M28/30 pattern. The rear sight is a band mounted ramped rear with protective “ears”, which moves and adjusts freely. The front sight is a bladed sight protected by “ears” The sight blade is stamped ‘76’ matching the barrel stamping of the same just before the sight. The action is set in a Finnish two-piece stock, with a matching serial on the left butt, and manufacturers mark with ‘39’ on the right butt. The only visible repair is a wood plug above the rear sling stud on the right sid of the comb. The stock suffers an impressed score line starting on the left side of the forward sling stud, joining an indentation on stud, and moving rearward approximately 2.5”. The stock also bears impression markings from long term storage in a soft case in the finish on the left side of the butt. The upper handguard has a through crack, left of center spanning from the barrel band forward, approximately 4”, towards centerline. The is a second crack is visible at the middle of the upper handguard, starting at the centerline and forward approximately 5”, ending right of centerline. The two cracks are approximately 2” from joining. The upper handguard has also suffered from shrinkage allowing it to rotate with approximately 1/8” of gap. The stock has a crack suffers a horizontal split stemming from under the butt plate, that runs through, but is held in place without separation. The stock remains serviceable, but carries various depressions and some heavy scarring and a symbol carved into the left side, behind the cross bolt.
