San Francisco Target Rifle.
Marked Browning & Heber from noted expert and author Larry Shelton Collection. Made between 1873 and 1877 at 651 Clay St., San Francisco, California. (Refer California Gunsmiths 1846-1900 by Lawrence Shelton, page 45.) Inscribed in script on top end of buttplate "John Mengel - 1874." Approximately 50" overall with 34 1/4" medium to heavy weight octagon barrel of approximately 40 cal rifled fitted with detachable false muzzle and bullet starter. Target rear sight and matching hooded front sight. Adjustable set trigger. Nicely checkered and stocked in figured walnut with German silver mounts. Correct to the era wiping rod. The browned barrel retains the majority of it's tobacco colored finish with some minor erosion and slight pitting at the breech area. The lock retains traces of silvery case-hardened drifted to silvery gray. The action and triggers work well. A far above average rifle from a top California collector's estate.
