U.S. Model 1861 Single-Shot Percussion Rifle-Musket, by Savage R.F.A. Co., with angular bayonet, NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as a bayonet lug) and two-leaf rear sights, marked ''N.J'', ''V/P/(eagle head)'' and ''1863'' at breech; beveled lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle with olive branches)/U.S.'' to left of ''Savage R.F.A. Co./Middletown, Ct.'' under percussion nipple bolster having a cleanout screw, and ''1863'' behind hammer; steel furniture includes two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel, buttplate marked ''U.S'' at top screw, three spring-retained barrel bands (middle with sling swivel), nosecap, and cupped tulip-head ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock is marked ''N.J'' on raised apron opposite lock. Condition is excellent. All steel surfaces retain their original ''arsenal bright'' finish that has lightly age-toned, edges and markings are very sharp and clear. Stock is sound and smooth with a few light handling/storage marks, sharp edges, and nice grain and color. The ''N.J'' mark on barrel and stock likely meant issue to New Jersey troops. Action is strong and smooth; bore is brilliant with sharp rifling; the gun appears unfired. ''US'' marked bayonet condition matches, but for a bit of scratching at throat. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.
