Scarce Antique Carcano Model 1868 Needle Fire Rifle, #953, converted from percussion, 17.5mm, 37.25" rifled barrel, straight grip nearly full-length wood stock with steel buttplate. Small blade front sight, rear sight base only. Sling swivel mounted to the middle band and front of trigger guard. Right side is dated, what looks like "1864". Large upside down "26" is stamped on right side of the buttstock with smaller horizontal "3728". There is an illegible proof mark on the old percussion base, small numbers stamped on inside of the trigger guard. After the noticeable battlefield success of the Dreyse needle fire rifle. The Italians began these conversions in 1867, using Salvatore Carcano's system. Condition is good with scattered areas of rust patina and moderate pitting to the metal. Heavier rust is present on the rear sight base. Wood with dark staining throughout, scattered dents and scratches. There is a crack to the right side of the forend that runs the full length, between the front and mid-barrel band. Action is stiff and functions but not smoothly. Needle sticks approx. 1/8" past the bolt face. Rifling is visible but the bore is dark with heavy frosting and some visible erosion. Hard to find in any condition. Est.: $700-$900. (Antique)
