Scarce Civil War U.S. Model 1861 Single-Shot Percussion Rifle-Musket, by William Muir & Co., NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' round barrel has block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and leaf rear sights; beveled lockplate has ''(spread-wing eagle)/U.S.'' to left of ''Wm. Muir & Co./Windsor Locks, CT.'' below percussion bolster having clean-out screw, and ''1863'' behind; steel fittings include two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, 3 spring-retained bands (middle with sling swivel), nosecap, and grooved-head ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Condition is very good, the metal shows age brown mixing with light surface erosion, and heavy black-powder pitting in nipple area. Stock shows overall age-use marks, an added coat of varnish and lacks the left-side inspector's cartouche. Lock markings are crisp, action is strong and smooth, smoothbore shows general black-powder erosion. Est.: $750-$1,000. (Antique)
