Scarce Pre-War Smith & Wesson .38/44 Outdoorsman Double Action Revolver, with 5" Barrel, #56282, .38 S&W Spec. cal., blue finish, checkered diamond center walnut Magna grips, McGivern gold bead front and square-notched fully adjustable rear sight, with color case hardened hammer and trigger. Frame and yoke with matching assembly numbers (12782). Barrel, cylinder, extractor, and back of right grip are numbered to the gun. Shipped to Western Auto Supply, Los Angeles, CA, April 14, 1938; with factory letter signed by S&W Historian Roy G. Jinks. Letter verifies barrel length, finish, front and rear sights. In a correct but unnumbered two-piece blue picture box. Condition is very good retaining approx. 90% factory blue. Muzzle wear, thinning to the back strap, and wide index line to the cylinder accounts for most of the finish loss. Square piece of what looks like textured tape has been adhered to back of the frame, below the hammer, otherwise showing scattered light scratches and blemishes associated with handling and use, the most noticeable is a scratch to the left side of the barrel. Only the slightest amount of case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. Grips are near excellent with sharp checkering and a small amount of typical light handling marks. Action is crisp and cycles smoothly. Cylinder locks up well with just a little rotational movement and end shake. Bore appears near excellent, bright with well-defined rifling. Box shows darkening, age, and wear, heaviest around the edges. The metal reinforced corners are intact, graphic is very dark and now faintly legible. Est.: $2,000-$2,500. (C&R/PPT)
