Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, 2nd Type, with Sling, NVSN, .50-70 Gov't CF cal., unmarked 32.5" barrel has block-blade front sight (also bayonet lug) and folding-leaf rear; breechblock marked "Model/1870/(eagle head with crossed arrows)/US" at hinge; beveled lockplate (from Civil War M.1863 rifle-musket) marked "(spread-wing eagle)" and "U.S./Springfield" ahead of hammer, "1863" behind; steel fittings include "US" marked buttplate, slotted and grooved ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1870-73 in approx. 10K qty. this type. Condition is good being smooth gray-brown gunmetal (bit of oxidation to buttplate) having sharp edges and markings. Stock shows wear and extensive dings from age and military use, added finish, but is sound. Action is strong and crisp, bore shows overall light erosion and very good rifling.
