Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 Two-Band Fullstock Military Rifle, #9528, .45-70 CF cal., 29.25'' round barrel marked ''Old Reliable'' and ''Sharps Rifle Co. Bridgeport, Conn.'' between breech and adjustable folding leaf rear sight, missing dovetailed front sight; flat-side steel receiver marked on the left ''Borchardt Patent/Sharps Rifle Co. Bridgeport, Conn./U.S.A.'' in three lines. Two-piece oil-finished walnut fullstock retained by two steel barrel bands with a steel nosecap and a coarsely checkered steel buttplate. Two rows of what may be initials were tapped into the left side between the bands, perhaps with a nail. The name ''T.L. Burk'' is stamped on the right side of receiver (indistinct), atop the breech (indistinct), on barrel above the rear band (indistinct), and clearly on the bottom of the forestock and in several places on both sides of the buttstock, as is a large ''B'' initial carved on the right. Condition is about good with barrel shortened from 32-1/8'', an overall deep brown age patina mixed with rust and scattered pitting to steel parts, and the expected wear/scars from military use to the wood stocks; factory markings are mostly clear; the steel ramrod is missing. Action is firm and smooth; bore is rusty but with distinct rifling and should clean. Mfg'd 1878-81 in a quantity of approx. 6,900 rifles, many of which went to foreign countries. Est.: $600-$900.
