Antique Sharps Model 1859 ''Straight Breech'' Percussion Military Rifle, possibly issued to Col. Hiram Berdan's U.S. Sharpshooters due to its serial number and double set triggers, #55933, .52 cal., 30'' round barrel with block-blade front sight (doubles as bayonet lug) and sliding-leaf rear sight, is marked ''Sharps Rifle/Manuf'g. Co./Hartford, Conn.'' behind lower band and ''New Model 1859'' at breech; receiver is marked ''Sharps Pat./Sept. 12th 1848'' at left, and ''R.S. Lawrence Pat./April 12th 1859'' over ''C. Sharps Pat/Oct.5th 1852'' on right, has pellet primer mechanism behind hammer, loop operating lever, and very rare double set triggers; oil-stained walnut forestock is held by three spring-retained bands (middle with sling swivel) and an iron nosecap, matching buttstock with iron buttplate, iron patchbox opening to a trap for patches, worm and extra nipples, with a sling swivel below. Condition is complete, original and very good, the metal surfaces having no original finishes but a gunmetal gray color with scattered pitting, age discoloration and sharp markings. Stocks are sound and smooth having occasional age/use dings and no inspectors' stamps. Action is strong and smooth; bore is clean showing scattered erosion and sharp rifling. Est.: $2,800-$3,400.
