Single shot, percussion cap ignited, breech loading, lever operated, falling block rifle. Features blued finish, two piece smooth wood stock, 22" barrel, blade front & ladder rear sights, lever lock, sling bar (missing the ring). Iron or steel barrel band and buttplate. Rear sight ladder does not have a detent position for the vertical position. Bore is fair to good condition, fairly bright with some frosting and some light pitting, shallow rifling. Shows dark color on barrel, blued appearance over dents and some light pitting, slightly rough texture in many places. Action shows spots of brown color patina over dull gray, areas of pinprick pitting. Wood is good condition, lightly varnished, with many small dents, shallow gouges. Action operates properly. Native beadwork strands are original and have been restrung at one time. As Addressed by included letter.
Included is a large file of various documents attesting to the rifle being previously owned by "Colonel" John G. Worth, later making it's way into the collection of Jack Green (who purchased this rifle in 1938 from Col Worth). Signed letters from Jack Green state that Col Worth acquired this rifle from the Little Big Horn battlefield "after the skirmish". This rifle is a percussion breech loader, not a 50-70 conversion. John Worth (b.1867, d.1941) was a known collector of Native American artifacts, was involved with the development of the American Indian Museum in Hershey PA, held a commission as an Army Reserve Captain in WWI, is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
