Shinto Period Japanese Shinogi-Zukuri Katana, in shira-saya (wood resting scabbard), probably dating from around 1650 to 1680. O-suriage nakago, mumei (tang has been cut down and unsigned) with three mekugi-ana (three holes in tang). Nice undulating midare-ba hamon temper line. Hada (grain of the metal) is itame or wood grain, but muted. Cutting edge measures 26-5/8''. The boshi (temper in the point area) is midare with a small turn back. Nice older Japanese polish to the blade surface. There are a couple of areas of slightly loose forging. The shira-saya has saya-gaki (writing on the scabbard) that attests to the attribution of the maker, blade length, etc., and is dated Showa 22(1947). Est.: $600-$800.
