SN: 3361 '1st Model Double Action Revolver', or model 1896. Double-action revolver built on the round butt I frame. S&W's first swing-out cylinder revolver, cylinder is unlocked by pulling forward the extractor rod. No locking lug under the barrel or thumb latch, 3 1/4' ribbed barrel with pinned round blade front sight and pinned u notch rear sight in the top strap. S&W markings and patent dates are stamped on the cylinder between the flutes, barrel has no markings with the S&W monogram is stamped on the sideplate. The cylinder stop is in the topstrap rather than in the frame. Nickel finish, case colored hammer & trigger, black hard rubber grips with S&W motifs, serial number matched on heel, barrel and cylinder. The bore is excellent/bright, the action is smooth with tight lock-up, traces of case color on the hammer& trigger, the grips are excellent with no chips or scratches, turning brown with age and the nickel finish is overall excellent with no flaking, the exception is a 3/4" patch of pitting on the mid backstrap. The First Model .32 Hand Ejector was made from 1896 through 1903. It had its own serial number range which ran from 1 to 19,712. The BATF lists the First Model as an antique, since all the frames were made and stamped with serial numbers before 1899. The four digit serial number would indicate early production anyway. You probablely won't find another one in this condition.
NRA Condition-Excellent as Antique Firearm.
