Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector First Model (Triple-Lock) Double Action Revolver, #13917, .44 S&W Spec. cal., 6.5" pinned barrel, factory nickel finish, pearl grips; right grip with a carved steers head with small ruby eyes. Roman numerals XXVII are scratched into back of the right grip. This revolver also features a round blade front and standard notched rear sight, color case hardened hammer and smooth trigger. Frame and yoke with matching assembly numbers (6444). Barrel, cylinder, yoke lock and extractor are numbered to the gun. L.?. Doyle is scratched into the lower left edge of the grip frame, under the grip. "Q-1/ 904357/JB" is lightly scratched into the lower front edge on the right side of the frame. Shipped to Stauffer Eshleman & Co., New Orleans, LA., Dec. 6, 1917, with factory letter signed by S&W Historian Roy G. Jinks. Letter verifies barrel length, finish, and the original grips are listed as checkered walnut. Condition is very good retaining approx. 93% factory nickel finish, with general light handling marks and a little fine scratching. There is a small amount of intermittent pinprick pitting present on the metal, most frequent on the sideplate. There are also spots of light pitting on the sides of the grip frame, under the grips. Factory lettering is clear. Case colors have mostly silvered out with some mild pitting and darkening to sides of the trigger. Grips fit well and are just a little proud at the butt and lower portion of the backstrap. Both have a nice, aged appearance, carving with well-defined edges, neither have any major blemishes. Action cycles smoothly and locks up securely. Bore is clean, lands and grooves are clearly defined, no frosting or erosion. An interesting piece with its added markings that are worth further research. Est.: $1,400-$1,800. (C&R/PPT)
