Antique single action rimfire revolver. Comes with a S&W factory letter signed by Roy Jinks stating this revolver was shipped from the factory on November 1, 1870 to M.W. Robinson, NYC, S&W's largest distributor. The No. 2 Army was popular in the old west, James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok: Carried a Model No. 2 as a backup and was famously documented to have one on his person when he was killed in Deadwood in 1876. General George Armstrong Custer famously owned and carried a pair of them during his military and frontier campaigns. Cole Younger: The notorious outlaw of the James-Younger gang favored the S&W No. 2 as a personal sidearm. Rutherford B. Hayes carried one to name a few. Features blued finish, smooth rosewood two piece grips, 5" octagon barrel with sighting rib, German silver front sight blade, rear notch sights, spur trigger, square butt, 6 shot unfluted cylinder, hinged frame tip-up action, manual extractor rammer pin under the barrel, smooth rosewood grips. One line address on the barrel rib, patent dates on the cylinder. Serial number on the heel with matching serial number on the inside of the right grip panel. Bore is very good/bright, strong rifling. Original blue finish is about 55%, mostly on the frame and barrel and in protected areas, the remainder of the surfaces have turned a thinning gray patina, S&W markings are crisp, grips are very good. Hammer action is smooth with tight lock-up. One of the pins is missing from the 3 pin topstrap.
