Smith & Wesson No. 3 Schofield .45 S&W SN: 8854
Smith & Wesson "2nd Model Schofield" No. 3 revolver in .45 Smith & Wesson Caliber. ( Second Model features a large, raised circle at the top of the latch), "W.F. & CO.. EX." marked top break single action revolver manufactured circa 1876-77, rare commercial model, approximately 650 revolvers produced without martial markings with a total of 5,934 Second Model Schofield’s manufactured. Lugged barrel has been shortened to 4 1/2" with sighting rib, pinned brass front sight blade, v-notch on lever, S&W address and patent dates in 2 lines on left barrel lug, 1 line 1873 Schofield patent date on right lug, with the Wells Fargo stamp to the rear of it. Serial number stamped on the heel, with matching number stamped on cylinder. The problem with the Wells Fargo stamp is known examples serial numbers are under 6000, they shortened the 7" barrels to 5" not 4 1/2" and the original stamps were small, fitting under the patent dates and followed by the re-stamped serial number. S&W markings are clear, two cock hammer action is crisp/tight, star extractor works well, bore is fair, strong rifling with some scattered light pitting, the blue finish is about 15% with handling/holster wear with the rest turned a gray color, barrel locks up tight. The revolver is fitted with a period of use set of nice aged ivory grips with decades of wear and patina, good fit. Comes in a glass covered display case.
NRA Condition-Good as Antique Firearm.
